World Diabetes Day (WDD) is the day in which millions of people worldwide unite to raise awareness about diabetes and the escalating health threat that it poses. WDD is celebrated every year on November 14 since its inception in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization.
The significance of this date is to mark the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting who, along with Charles Best and John Macleod, discovered insulin in 1921.
While campaigns last the whole year, WDD is celebrated by associations, organizations, companies, healthcare professionals and people living with diabetes and their families around the world.
Individuals, organisations and companies develop a various range of activities each year to raise awareness of diabetes and the need for research towards finding better treatments and management of diabetes, prevention of diabetes and its complications, and finding a cure.
Activities include: radio and television programs, sports events, screenings for diabetes and its complications, poster and leaflet campaigns, press conferences, newspaper and magazine articles, events for children and adolescents, monument lightings, walks, runs and cycles.
